Project Overview

To build a robust and reliable AI system to support Drivers in cities you need robust data from users using the AI System. To get that data from users you need a robust reliable AI system to convince users to use your system. It was the classic chicken and the egg situation.

This was the challenge that Toyota brought to our UX design team when they were considerng to add the ability for the car to know and predict the states of traffic signals along a drivers route.

Solution Overview

From the user research there arose several opportunities to help he user maintain a sense of accomplishment while driving even while stuck in traffic. This solution needed to take in to account that traffic had moments of accomplishment and delays, and was also dependant on wider traffic patterns beyond intersections. Lastly it needed to aknowledge that the Machine Learning for the traffic signals was not robust, and users needed to be awre of this.

The solution this incorporated data from forward sensors, other vehicles, and would start as a beta project that users could experiement with while a more robust data set was developed.Driver
